反比例閥配合蝶式進氣控制閥使用，當系統壓力因用氣量減少而升高時，達到反比例閥設定壓力時，反比例閥動作并減少控制空氣輸出量，空壓機進氣閥伺服氣缸閥桿推力減少，在彈簧力的作用下，閥桿回縮，當彈簧力與氣缸的氣體推力平衡時，閥桿處于半開狀態，滑片式壓縮機進氣量減少至與系統用氣量相平衡。
反比例閥的調整比較簡單，但要實現伺服汽缸的靈敏動作則需要多次調整，反比例閥的調整目的是空氣壓力達到距壓力開關動作的上下限均有0.02MPa時反比例閥動作，以減少或增加滑片式壓縮機進氣量使進氣閥相應關小或開大，提前調節空壓機容量，以減少空重負荷次數。反比例閥順時針方向調整有增加伺服氣缸進氣量的效果，反之，則減少進氣量。
