安全閥有彈簧式和桿式兩大類。另外還有沖量式安全閥、先導式安全閥、安全切換閥、安全解壓閥、靜重式安全閥等。彈簧式安全閥主要依靠彈簧的作用力而工作，彈簧式安全閥中又有封閉和不封閉的，一般易燃、易爆或有毒的介質應選用封閉式，蒸汽或惰性氣體等可以選用不封閉式，在彈簧式安全閥中還有帶扳手和不帶扳手的。杠桿式安全閥主要依靠杠桿重錘的作用力而工作，但由于杠桿式安全閥體積龐大往往限制了選用范圍。溫度較高時選用帶散熱器的安全閥。

安全閥顧名思義是保證壓力管道、壓力容器的關鍵安全應用保障，為了保證安全閥的正常工作及延長安全閥的使用壽命，在使用中應做到定期檢查運行中的安全閥是否泄漏，卡阻及彈簧銹蝕等不正常現象，并注意觀察調節螺套及調節圈緊定螺釘的鎖緊螺母是否有松動，若發現問題及時采取適當的維護措施。還應定期將安全閥拆下進行全面清洗、檢查并重新研磨、整定后方可重新使用。安裝在室外的安全閥要采取適當的防護措施，以防止雨、霧、塵埃、銹污等 臟物 侵入安全閥及排放管道，當環境低于攝氏零度時，還應采取必要的防凍措施以保證安全閥動作的可靠性。本類閥門在管道中一般應當按照工況正確安裝。

安全閥的主要參數是排量，這個排量決定于閥座的口徑和閥瓣的開啟高度，由開啟高度不同，又分為微啟式和全啟式兩種。微啟式是指閥瓣的開啟高度為閥座喉徑的1/40～l/20。全啟式是指閥瓣的開啟高度為閥座喉徑的1/4。

由操作壓力決定安全閥的公稱壓力，由操作溫度決定安全閥的使用溫度范圍，由計算出的安全閥的定壓值決定彈簧或杠桿的定壓范圍，再根據使用介質決定安全閥的材質和結構型式，再根據安全閥泄放量計算出安全閥的喉徑。以下為安全閥選用的一般規則。

 （l）熱水鍋爐一般用不封閉帶扳手微啟式安全閥。

（2）蒸汽鍋爐或蒸汽管道一般用不封閉帶扳手全啟式安全閥 

（3）水等液體不可壓縮介質一般用封閉微啟式安全閥，或用安全泄放閥。

（4）高壓給水一般用封閉全啟式安全閥，如高壓給水加熱器、換熱器等。 

（5）氣體等可壓縮性介質一般用封閉全啟式安全閥，如儲氣罐、氣體管道等。

（6）E級蒸汽鍋爐一般用靜重式安全閥。

（7）大口徑，大排量及高壓系統一般用脈沖式安全閥，如減溫減壓裝置、電站鍋爐等，如圖8所示。

（8）運送液化氣的火車槽車、汽車槽車、貯罐等一般用內裝式安全閥，如圖4所示。

（9）油罐頂部一般用液壓安全閥，需與呼吸閥配合使用。

（10）井下排水或天然氣管道一般用先導式安全閥，如圖6所示。

（11）液化石油氣站罐泵出口的液相回流管道上一般用安全回流閥。

（12）負壓或操作過程中可能會產生負壓的系統一般用真空負壓安全閥。

（13）背壓波動較大和有毒易燃的容器或管路系統一般用波紋管安全閥。
